I was driving westbound on Wilshire Blvd into Beverly Hills last week when Taylor Swift’s song Shake It Off came on the radio. I cranked it up and danced in my seat. True story. I love the song’s message: “…the players gonna play…the haters gonna hate…the fakers gonna fake…but I’m just gonna shake it off, shake it off …”
Haven’t we all run into players, haters and fakers? And that can be even more prevalent when we dare to show up and be seen in our career and life. Right? Our energy and authenticity aren’t always going to get a good response from everyone, and we need to find ways to shake off the naysayers. Trying to please everyone and analyzing the negative feedback is not energy well spent. It doesn’t serve you. So, for your own sake, use the following approaches to stay centered and confident with who you are and put your energy into fulfilling your potential instead…
- Remember it’s not about you. Those who are throwing out their negative energy are quite unhappy with themselves and are often operating out of fear. They think putting down others raises them up and gives them power. We know it doesn’t; sometimes we need to remind ourselves.
- Be clear about your values. Knowing what you value and using that as an intellectual and spiritual anchor can really help you feel more centered and less affected if a player, hater or faker tries to knock you over, especially when their values are different than yours. - Trust your instincts. If you get a bad vibe or are drained after spending time with someone, maybe it’s time to say goodbye.
- Meet new people. Be on the lookout for opportunities to expand your professional network and cultivate new, positive friendships. Bring your most confident, authentic self to these meetings.
- Focus on the good stuff. People are waiting for your gifts and messages. Focus on those folks, and know your time and work are worthwhile for yourself and them.
Some of these tips aren’t always easy to apply; I understand. The more you dare to dream, the more you take action, the more you shine, the more you may run into players, haters and fakers. At the same time, your message will resonate with those who need it. Stay focused on that and know I’m sending you love!
In the comment section below, please let me know which one of these tips resonates the most with you and why. I’m anxious to hear!
