“Style is a way to say who you are without having to speak.” – Rachel Zoe, fashion stylist and designer
What you wear communicates a message, whether you like it or not. It’s a reflection of your personal brand. And just as important, what you wear can influence how you feel.
When I put on my jeans with my Ugg boots and an old T-shirt, I feel differently than if I put on my jeans with my 4” heels and a blazer. I also feel differently if I’m wearing a bright green top versus a black one.
While caring about fashion and style may sound superficial to some – why not be aware of how you’re presenting yourself and wear what helps you feel your best … especially if you’re looking to create a change in your career or life? To set yourself up for success, I recommend avoiding these four workplace fashion faux pas (all of which I’ve seen first hand and one of which I’m guilty of myself).
1) Flip-Flops
Save the flip-flops for when you’re headed to the beach or when you’re shopping while wearing a cute maxi dress. Even in a casual work environment, I wouldn’t recommend slipping these on and heading to the office. Good options for women are a flat, a wedge or even a peep-toe pump. For men, there are great sneakers available that aren’t meant for the gym (or the workplace).
2) Sweats
Sure, comfort is important, but if you find yourself choosing a hooded sweatshirt or sweatpants for the office, it’s time to rethink your morning routine. Save the sweats for couch potato Saturdays or a workout, and put on nice jeans with a shirt or blouse instead. If you make the change, check out if you feel differently. I dare say you will!
3) Holes in Your Jeans
Ladies, this spring deconstructed boyfriend jeans are very trendy, but wear them on your nights out on the town. Instead of jeans with holes, try cropped pants or jeans with details. If you want a little edginess to your look, pair your T-shirt with a skirt or throw on a detailed vegan leather coat with your pants.
4) Showing Your Underwear… on Purpose
Yes, I’ve seen this fashion faux pas too. Whether it’s the underwear that rides above the waistband or the colorful bra strap that provides an accent color to the tank top, it’s not recommended for the workplace. Keep these details to yourself. Instead, find other ways to show your personal style.
When you’re looking through magazines, start tearing out pages of outfits you like, or create a Pinterest board with clothes, outfits and accessories you like. Notice the similarities with the outfits in order to identify your personal style.
